How patio enclosures work
A patio enclosure adds walls to an existing covered patio. Panels range from screens to clear vinyl to glass windows, and many systems mix them, with screens up high and solid kick panels down low. The existing roof stays in place, which keeps the cost down.

Panel options
- Screen: best airflow and lowest cost.
- Clear vinyl: blocks wind and light rain and can slide or roll open.
- Glass: the most finished look and the best protection, closest to a three-season room.
- Drop shades: roll-down shades on open sides for sun and privacy.

Rules to know
Many San Diego County cities require part of a patio cover to stay open, often 65 percent of the longer wall and one more wall, unless the space is permitted as a room or sunroom. That is why some enclosures use screens or removable panels. Our city pages list what we found for each city, and your contractor will confirm what applies to your home.
What it costs
Patio enclosures nationally average about $17,800, with most projects between roughly $8,700 and $28,400 depending on size and panels. See the cost guide.
