Screen Rooms

A screen room is the most affordable way to enclose a patio. Screened walls under a solid roof keep out bugs, leaves and pets while letting the ocean breeze through.

What a screen room is

A screen room uses heavy-duty screen panels in an aluminum frame, set under a solid or insulated roof. It can be a new structure or built under an existing patio cover. Some designs use removable vinyl or acrylic panels so you can close the room up on cool or windy days.

Permits

Screen rooms and enclosed patios usually need a permit, and many cities limit how much of a patio cover can be enclosed before it counts as a room. Check the rules for your city on our city pages or ask your contractor.

What it costs

Adding screens to an existing cover runs roughly $10 to $25 per square foot nationally. A new screened patio built from scratch costs more. See the cost guide.

Common Questions

Can you screen in my existing patio cover?

Often, yes. The cover needs to be in good condition and able to support the frame. A contractor will check before quoting.

Do screen rooms keep out rain?

Not completely. Wind can blow rain through screens. Vinyl or acrylic panels can be added for wet or windy weather.

Are screen rooms good near the beach?

Yes. Aluminum frames and the right screen material hold up well to coastal air, and screens let the breeze through.
